FIRST DAY

After a copious breakfast, we shall leave Valle Capore headed to the river Farfa. Following the river for a couple of kilometres, we shall reach Ponte Buita from where we’ll climb up to Le Massaccie, next to the ancient roman way La Salaria. We shall then follow La Salaria, directed towards the Madonna della Quercia  (Our Lady of the Oak), and finally cross it thanks to an underpass. After a picnic, we shall climb the hill overlooking Ponticella following the Longboard road “Ginocchio di Bue” (Oxen knee) up to Pratarelle. We shall then descend to the area known as Pantani to reach the stables where we shall shelter the horses for the night. Humans, on the other hand, will be guests of the Marquis Camillo Malvezzi in the castle that his family built in Orvinio in the eighteen century. The impressive stronghold dominates the picturesque village and it is immersed in the natural beauty of the regional park of the Monti Lucretili. A gala dinner will be served and guests will be accommodated in double rooms with private bathroom.

SECOND DAY

The ride begins with the crossing of the Marquis’ property. A vast, flat landscape shall accompany our journey to the ruins of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Piano. From there we shall climb to the small village of Pozzaglia Sabina where we shall enter the natural reserve that carries its name and take the scenic route to the lake Turano. Picnic. After a short rest, we shall descend towards Monteleone Sabino to visit Santa Vittoria, an early Christian church built upon the ruins of a pagan temple to the sun, and the roman amphitheatre in Trebula Metuesca. From there, we shall continue to the stream that separates Monteleone from Poggio San Lorenzo and reach our destination for the night. We shall stay in loc. Carnevale, at a farm that specializes in breeding Arab horses. We shall spend the night in one of their cabins, cots and sleeping bags. Bathroom is shared. Before bedtime, dinner will be served chez Peppino.

THIRD DAY:

From Carnevale Basso we shall cross the pass of Ornaro Alto and the Salaria to enter the territory of Montenero Sabino. There we shall savour the typical dishes of the area at the hostelry La Quercia and prepare for the afternoon leg. We shall tackle a 15 km long dirt-road known as the Strada della Montagna (The road of the Mountain) that will take us near the village of San Giovanni from where we shall reach our destination for the night: the agritourism Il Casale di Tancia. The agritourism is located in the middle of an oak wood and offers accommodation in double room with private bathroom. Dinner will be served in this ancient rural home recently renovated.

FOURTH DAY:

We shall leave Il Casale del Tancia to cross Valle Gemini and reach Prati di Poggio Perugino. There we shall take the ancient Via delle Fonti (Road of the Springs) and ride on scenic hill crests, through vales and beech tree woods. Fonte Ferrara, Fonte Creta, Fonte Lallo will punctuate our journey. After a picnic, we shall reach the hut of Santo Tomeo (956 asl), where we shall get ready to spend the night (cots and sleeping bags). From the hut it is possible to organize a trip (by car) to visit the meadows of Cottanello.

FIFTH DAY:

We shall leave Santo Tomeo, travelling along the Via delle Fonti to the meadows of Poggio Perugino, from where we shall reach the fields of Salisano and Osteria Faducchi, by way of the Trocchi. From there we shall cross the stream Rasciano and then follow the river Farfa from Mompeo to return to Valle Capore.
